About the Author

Chuck Stewart resides in Auburn, AL with his wife Melinda, their daughter Savanah Eve, four dogs, a cat and a turtle. He grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1971. He has worked in the concrete industry for the last 36 years and is presently plant manager of Sherman-Twin City Ready Mix in Auburn. His interests include collecting vintage baseball gloves and baseball history exclusively relating to Rickwood Field, the Birmingham Barons and Birmingham A's. He has acquired since childhood an extensive collection of memorabilia and one of a kind artifacts from both the history of Rickwood, its players and teams.

The Story Behind My Book

He is a member of the Friends of Rickwood an organization dedicated to the preservation of Rickwood Field. He has recently written the article, "1964 Boyhood Memories of Rickwood" for the 2007 Rickwood Classic edition of the Rickwood Times. The Father of three boys, four girls, a granddaughter and two grandsons, in 2008 he began writing a story for his youngest daughter Savanah Eve to give to her on her thirteenth birthday. The story started out as a father's effort to somehow instill confidence in her ability to compete in this world and at the same time help her to understand the importance of family and the choices that she will face in the coming years. He soon discovered after its completion, that what he had written was more than just a father's guidance for his daughter, but a wonderful tale which combined common sense family values around the magic of Rickwood. He had created a story that hopefully all parents will want their children on the verge of becoming young adults to read and the lessons taught to help guide them down the road. He also hopes that through his books the reader will discover the true wonder of Rickwood Field and that out of the pages a new fan base will be born to love and help preserve the old ballpark and its history.

"Angels, Conductors and Willie Mays" follows the exploits of the series central characters Kat Bottoms and Annie Payne and their adventures at Rickwood Field.  Along the way they will meet the famous players, managers, owners, clowns and heroes.  They will also witness the special games, the plays and of course the angels that are at the ballpark and are still there today and have been for 100 years.

Credits

"Angels at Rickwood" would not have been made possible without the help of Coke Matthews and the Friends of Rickwood, especially their director David Brewer and members of the board of directors Clarence Watkins and Lamar Smith. Special thanks goes out to Laura Bost Morris for her time, help and dedication to this project. And last but not least my beautiful wife Melinda who somehow manages to put up with all the sacrifices a project like this demands.
